My inspiration came from the Greenlandish identity crisis. I wanted to somehow express the sadness that was brought upon the Greenlandish people when the white man intruded upon their world.

But also the confusion they were left with on whether they should adopt new modern ways or stick to their own traditions. I ended up making a “Greenlandish evolution” that shows the transformation from bright colours and harmony into this threatened dark appearance. I eventually chose to make a look that was in the middle of the transformation. The dark pointy spikes symbolises how many times they’ve been “burned”, and the long garment underneath contains of two layers: one white with beautiful blue print and a light grey that cover up and blur the centre of inner peace.

Process

Research, research and then some more research on the subject. I then experimented with the idea of “confused fabric”. Fabric with a print or structure that would make it hard for the eyes to rest on. I then made collages of different attitudes that I found interesting, and added some depth and dimension to the piece. I ended up sewing plastic cones into the jacket, to bring the right amount of attitude to the style.
